The Council of Arab Ministers of Information, part of the League of Arab States, has approved the designation of Rabat as the Arab Capital of Information for the year 2026.
They announced the decision on Wednesday in Cairo at the end of the Council’s 55th ordinary session. The Council also selected Doha as the Arab Capital of Information for 2027 and Damascus for 2028.
The Council called on Morocco to prepare an integrated program to celebrate Rabat’s selection. It asked that the program include cultural and media activities dedicated to Al Quds Acharif, reflecting the city’s significance in the Arab and Islamic worlds.
The Council also urged Arab media outlets to give greater attention to the issue of occupied Al Quds and support the Council’s decision to recognize the Holy City as the eternal Arab Capital of Information.
Rabat is the capital of Morocco and one of the country’s most important political and cultural centers. Located along the Atlantic coast and the Bouregreg River, the city is known for its calm atmosphere, rich history, and well-preserved heritage sites.
Known as the City of Lights, Rabat is home to several major national institutions, including the Royal Palace, the Moroccan Parliament, and many government ministries. Its historic landmarks, such as the Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the Kasbah of the Udayas, and the Chellah, attract visitors from around the world.
Rabat is also recognized for its modern infrastructure, universities, cultural festivals, and growing creative industries. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012 for its blend of modern urban planning and historical architecture.
As the Arab Capital of Information for 2026, Rabat is expected to host a series of events, exhibitions, and media-focused activities that celebrate both its heritage and its role as a leading cultural hub in the Arab world.
