Morocco officially assumed the presidency of the GTMO 5+5 for the 2026-2028 term, succeeding the Malta, which had chaired the Group since 2021.
The handover took place on Wednesday at the conclusion of the 11th Conference of Ministers of Transport of the Western Mediterranean Group in Rabat.
Delegations expressed full confidence in the Kingdom’s leadership and its commitment to bringing new momentum to the Group’s work in pursuit of a shared vision for transport that supports economic development and regional cohesion.
During its mandate, Morocco will focus on developing an integrated multimodal transport network, advancing the Trans-Maghreb Multimodal Corridor, supporting climate-resilient and low-carbon transport systems, and accelerating digital transformation in the sector.
Minister of Transport and Logistics Abdessamad Kayouh said the presidency is both an honor and a responsibility, highlighting Morocco’s role as a strategic bridge between Europe, the Mediterranean, and Africa.
The governmental official reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening cooperation and promoting innovative solutions among the region’s countries to address shared transport challenges.
He noted that the presidency aligns with the enlightened vision of HM King Mohammed VI, aimed at promoting an approach based on solidarity, dialogue, mutual cooperation and concerted solution in service of sustainable development and shared prosperity of the region’s countries.
