Morocco’s Ambassador to Germany Zohour Alaoui paid tribute to renowned German-Moroccan oncologist Jalid Sehouli during a reception held Tuesday at the Moroccan Residence in Berlin.

The event was attended by diplomats, leading German medical professors and researchers, particularly from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, a renown university hospital worldwide, as well as representatives of the Moroccan medical community in Germany.

In her remarks, Ambassador Alaoui praised Prof. Sehouli’s outstanding career and his attachment to his Moroccan roots, describing him as a symbol of successful integration and international excellence. She said his journey reflects core Moroccan values and serves as an inspiration to younger generations of Moroccans living abroad.

In a statement to MAP, Prof. Sehouli expressed gratitude for the tribute and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening scientific and human ties between Morocco and Germany.

Born into a Moroccan family in a modest neighborhood of Berlin, he noted that his journey had been “not easy,” as he first worked as a nurse before becoming a doctor, professor, and head of one of the world’s most prestigious hospitals—a path he considered “impossible” in Germany, but which ultimately became a reality thanks to his perseverance.

Director of the Department of Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology at Charité’s Virchow-Klinikum and Benjamin Franklin campuses, Prof. Sehouli is internationally recognized for his work in gynecological cancers, particularly ovarian cancer. His research and innovative surgical approaches have contributed significantly to advances in cancer treatment and patient care worldwide.

He also heads the European Competence Center for Ovarian Cancer, co-directs Charité’s Cancer Center, and plays a leading role in several international oncology organizations, helping foster scientific cooperation between Europe, the Arab world, and beyond.
