The extraordinary session of the Arab League Council at ministerial level was held on Sunday via videoconference to discuss Iranian attacks against Arab States.

In a speech at the opening of the meeting, Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit said that the meeting aimed to send “a clear message to everyone in the region and worldwide that Arabs speak with one voice and stand united in condemning and rejecting any aggression against an Arab State, any violation of its sovereignty, or any threat to the integrity of its territory and airspace.”

“These attacks are condemned across the board and rejected by Arab governments and peoples,” he argued. He also considered that these attacks “disregard the principles of good neighborliness and constitute a flagrant and dangerous breech of international laws and conventions, particularly by targeting civilians and civilian facilities and property,” adding that they stand as “a threat to Arab national security as a whole.”

Aboul Gheit also noted that “Arab countries did not expect that their commitment to the principles of good neighborliness and sincere diplomatic efforts would be met with missiles and drones targeting populations and infrastructure.”

“This unjustified Iranian aggression reflects confusion in its assessment of the situation and accentuates Iran’s isolation in this difficult and delicate context, while leaving negative repercussions that are likely to affect its relations with its Arab neighbors,” he said.

He went on to call for an immediate and effective halt to these attacks, urging the international community, represented by the UN Security Council, to take all possible measures to put a stop to Iranian attacks on Arab territories.

“Despite the violence and escalation we have witnessed, diplomacy remains a possibility if all parties revert to reason and logic,” he continued, calling on all parties to “immediately return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy to address pending issues.”
