Bolstering cooperation in maritime fisheries and prospects for revitalizing bilateral relations between Morocco and Guinea were the focus of talks on Tuesday in Rabat between Secretary of State for Maritime Fisheries Zakia Driouich and Minister of Fisheries and the Maritime Economy of the Republic of Guinea Fassou Théa, who is on a working visit to Morocco.

In a statement to the press on this occasion, Théa noted that his visit to Morocco serves a dual purpose: to support Guinea’s current chairmanship of the Ministerial Conference on Fisheries Cooperation among African States Bordering the Atlantic Ocean (COMHAFAT/ATLAFCO) and to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

He emphasized the need to revitalize ATLAFCO, which comprises 22 African countries, with a view to strengthening regional cooperation in the fisheries sector and improving governance, adding that this visit provided an opportunity to draw inspiration from Morocco’s experience in the field of maritime fisheries and to explore ways of updating and implementing the bilateral cooperation agreement.

The Guinean minister expressed his country’s gratitude for the efforts made by Morocco, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, particularly regarding the development of fisheries infrastructure and support for bilateral cooperation.

He also presented the Simandou 2040 strategic vision, which includes several key projects in the fisheries and maritime economy sectors, aimed at establishing integrated and sustainable resource governance.

For her part, Driouich emphasized that this meeting is part of the historic ties between Morocco and Guinea, marked by over two decades of cooperation in the field of marine fisheries.

The Secretary of State highlighted Morocco’s commitment to strengthening South-South cooperation within the framework of a win-win partnership.

Driouich and Théa also spoke of giving new impetus to bilateral cooperation by focusing on transformative, high-impact projects, particularly in the areas of aquaculture, capacity building, the promotion of seafood products, and the improvement of value chains.

Following the meeting, the Guinean delegation visited the Fishing vessel monitoring center, where members learned about technologies used to monitor and control maritime fishing activities, as well as the center’s roles in overseeing and regulating the sector.
