With Morocco moving closer to the legislative elections scheduled for September 23 this year, Rachid Talbi Alami has officially announced his candidacy for a new parliamentary term, once again placing himself at the center of the country’s political scene during a critical period for the ruling majority.
The senior member of the National Rally of Independents confirmed his decision during an appearance on the television program “Le débat continue,” broadcast by SNRT.
Balancing experience and generational change within the RNI
His announcement comes only a few months before Moroccans head to the polls in what is expected to be one of the country’s most closely watched elections in recent years.
During the interview, Talbi Alami defended the idea that political renewal should not come at the expense of experience.
Using a popular Moroccan saying, he argued that while new political figures can bring energy and attract public attention, experienced leaders remain essential for ensuring stability and continuity within political institutions.
His remarks reflected the broader debate currently taking place inside Moroccan political parties, particularly within the governing majority, over how to balance generational change with institutional experience.
The RNI, which has played a leading role in the current government coalition, is increasingly seeking to present itself as a party capable of combining younger profiles with long-established political figures.
Talbi Alami said the party still needs experienced cadres capable of managing political and institutional responsibilities, especially at a time when Morocco faces major economic, social, and geopolitical challenges.
At the same time, he acknowledged the growing role of younger politicians inside the party and stressed the importance of preparing a new generation of leaders.
He highlighted the role of Mohamed Chaouki, whom he described as one of the figures expected to contribute to the party’s future direction and internal political momentum ahead of the upcoming elections.
Beyond electoral politics, Talbi Alami also used the interview to defend his record as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
He spoke about the constitutional responsibilities of Parliament and the importance of preserving the legislative process at a time when political institutions are facing increasing public scrutiny.
He pointed in particular to parliamentary diplomacy, which has become an important part of Morocco’s broader diplomatic strategy in recent years.
According to Talbi Alami, Parliament has played a role in defending Morocco’s strategic interests internationally, especially on issues linked to national sovereignty and foreign relations.
The veteran politician has been one of the most visible figures within the RNI for decades.
Born in 1958 in Tetouan, Talbi Alami has held several high-level positions throughout his political career, including ministerial posts and regional responsibilities.
Over time, he established himself as one of the party’s most influential leaders and a key figure within Morocco’s governing majority.
Electoral preparations intensify ahead of Morocco’s 2026 legislative vote
His decision to seek another parliamentary mandate comes as Moroccan authorities intensify preparations for the September elections.
The Ministry of Interior recently launched the exceptional revision process for the country’s general electoral lists, an important step ahead of the vote.
According to the ministry, citizens can submit new registration requests between May 15 and June 13, 2026.
Moroccan citizens who are not yet registered and who meet the legal conditions, including young voters turning 18 before election day, are encouraged to complete the process during this period.
Authorities are also calling on voters who have changed their place of residence to update or transfer their electoral registration to their new commune or district.
The process can be completed either online through the official electoral portal or directly through local administrative offices.
The Interior Ministry also urged citizens to verify their registration status through the dedicated electoral platform or by sending a text message to the official verification service.
Officials say the revision process is essential to ensuring transparent and updated electoral lists ahead of the parliamentary vote.
The upcoming elections are expected to shape the next phase of Morocco’s political landscape, particularly as parties begin positioning themselves around economic reforms, employment, social policies, and institutional governance.
For the RNI, retaining experienced political figures such as Talbi Alami while promoting a younger generation may become one of the party’s main strategies heading into the campaign season.
As political activity gradually intensifies across the country, Talbi Alami’s announcement is likely to mark the beginning of a broader electoral mobilization among Morocco’s major political parties in the months leading up to September 2026.
