In a move to bolster cooperation on dispute resolution and mediation, the Moroccan Ministry of Justice and the International Organisation for Mediation (IOMed) signed on Thursday in Rabat a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

Initialled by the Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi, and President of the International Organisation for Mediation (IOMed), Hua Chunying, the memorandum establishes a formal framework for coordination, and outlines the strategic mechanisms for institutional partnership, focusing on collaborative efforts in mediation and dispute resolution.

The agreement covers several areas, mainly the development of international mediation and the promotion of its use, particularly in the trade and investment sectors.

It also provides for the support of training activities, the exchange of expertise, and the sharing of best practices among the actors and institutions concerned.

The signing of this memorandum falls within the framework of the Kingdom’s accession to the IOMed founding agreement in October 2025, as well as the growing dynamic of mediation at the international level as an effective mechanism for resolving disputes in economic and commercial fields, and as a tool for strengthening the attractiveness of the business climate and legal stability.

Quoted in a press release by the Ministry of Justice, Ouahbi said that “the signing of this memorandum of understanding with the IOMed constitutes an important step towards strengthening international cooperation and developing mediation mechanisms, considered an essential lever for improving the effectiveness of justice and supporting the attractiveness of investments.”

He added that the visit of the IOMed President to Morocco reflects the advanced position occupied by the Kingdom in the field of modernizing the judicial system.

For her part, Hua Chunying praised the reform dynamic taking place in the justice sector in Morocco, emphasizing that the memorandum signed today will contribute to strengthening the exchange of experiences, developing best practices in mediation, and supporting efforts aimed at promoting the culture of amicable dispute settlement internationally.

The meeting also allowed for the exchange of views on ways to develop cooperation between the Ministry of Justice and the IOMed, as well as reviewing the experiences and best practices adopted internationally regarding dispute resolution, with the aim of supporting national efforts to consolidate the culture of dialogue and consensus and broaden the use of alternative dispute resolution methods.

The visit of the IOMed President to Morocco is part of the dynamic adopted by the Kingdom to strengthen its openness to international initiatives aimed at developing mediation and dispute settlement mechanisms, while consolidating its place among the essential components of a modern judicial system.

This visit has particular strategic importance given the evolution of legal and judicial systems around the world towards a greater adoption of mediation and alternative dispute resolution methods, as an effective and complementary option to traditional justice. These mechanisms offer more flexible, faster, and less costly solutions, thereby contributing to legal security and strengthening confidence in the business and investment climate.

It also reflects the growing recognition of the position now occupied by the Kingdom, regionally and internationally, in the field of modernizing its judicial system and developing its legal and institutional structures, in accordance with a reform vision aimed at building a more effective, more efficient, and more open to international reference experiences justice.
