Speaker of Morocco’s House of Representatives Rachid Talbi El Alami held talks on Monday in Rabat with the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities Committee of the Portuguese Assembly of the Republic, José de Almeida Cesário, on the occasion of the latter’s working visit to Morocco aimed at strengthening parliamentary relations between the two countries at both bilateral and multilateral levels.

During the meeting, the two sides highlighted the historic ties linking Morocco and Portugal, as well as the major development projects launched by the Kingdom under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which have positioned Morocco as a model in numerous fields at both the continental and international levels, according to a statement by the House of Representatives.

The discussions also provided an opportunity to review developments regarding Morocco’s territorial integrity issue, culminating in the adoption of the historic United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, and to express appreciation for Portugal’s full support for the Autonomy Initiative presented by Morocco in 2007, as well as for international legality.

In this context, Talbi El Alami stressed that Morocco, in accordance with the High Guidelines of His Majesty the King, remains committed to resolving all disputes through peaceful means, with full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

Regarding parliamentary affairs, the two officials examined relations between their respective legislative institutions and ways to further strengthen them at both bilateral and multilateral levels by making the most of available opportunities, including the exchange of parliamentary working visits and the sharing of experiences and expertise.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities Committee also exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues of common parliamentary interest.
