The Congo Basin Climate Commission (CBCC) highly praised, on Sunday in Nairobi, the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in terms of African climate action, highlighting the Sovereign’s efforts in favor of South-South cooperation and African mobilization in the face of climate change challenges.
Through the creation of three African commissions dedicated to climate issues during the African Action Summit held on the sidelines of COP22 at the initiative of HM King Mohammed VI, the Sovereign expressed the vision that Africa must take matters into its own hands in the face of climate challenges, stressed the Executive Secretary of the Congo Basin Climate Commission and Congolese Minister of Environment, Sustainable Development and the Congo Basin, Arlette Soudan-Nonault.
In a statement to MAP following the proceedings of the CBCC Council of Ministers, she recalled that this dynamic originated in this “historic” Summit, which saw the creation, under the impetus of His Majesty the King, of the three Climate Commissions for Island States, the Sahel Region, and the Congo Basin.
She noted that the Congo Basin Commission has not only a political-diplomatic institution, but also an operational and financial instrument, the Blue Fund for the Congo Basin, intended to materialize African climate commitments.
She indicated that the next step will be dedicated to mobilizing the financing necessary to launch the projects of the Blue Fund for the Congo Basin, announcing the upcoming holding of a donors’ round table dedicated to this objective.
Soudan-Nonault also announced that the fourth Summit of Heads of State of the Congo Basin Climate Commission will be held on May 12 in Nairobi, as a prelude to the donors’ round table scheduled for May 26.
She pointed out that several international partners have already expressed their interest in supporting the projects included in the organization’s investment plan.
Morocco took part in the proceedings of the Council of Ministers of the Congo Basin Climate Commission through a delegation led by the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, and including the Director of Climate and Biological Diversity, Rachid Tahiri, the Director of Global Issues at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Ismail Chekkori, in addition to other officials.
