The regular session of the 5th Specialized Technical Committee (STC) on Transport and Energy of the African Union began on Monday in Johannesburg, with the participation of a Moroccan delegation composed of several officials from the energy, transport, and logistics sectors.

This session, organized by the African Union Commission in cooperation with South Africa under the theme “The Africa We Are Building: Transport and Energy as Catalysts for Africa’s Prosperity,” aims to strengthen coordination and common policies to support continental integration and the implementation of Agenda 2063.

The event will take place in two phases: the first, an expert meeting on April 27 and 28, will focus on reviewing progress made on continental projects and preparing reports. The ministerial session, scheduled for April 30, will adopt the recommendations and make strategic policy decisions.

This meeting seeks to accelerate the continental integration agenda by bolstering coordination, policies, and infrastructure investments.

In particular, it will provide an opportunity to assess the progress of the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA), as well as solutions related to renewable energy and the acceleration of the energy transition on the continent.

Discussions will also focus on transport and connectivity, including the strengthening of continental links, the development of the African Single Air Transport Market, and future planning through the discussion of sectoral action plans for the period 2026–2027 and the energy statistics strategy (2026–2031).

Participants will also review the adoption of the 2025–2027 action plan, the promotion of the transport sector (air, rail, maritime, and road) with a focus on safety and digitation, as well as pathways to energy transition through the review of renewable energy initiatives, market integration, and strengthening the role of the African Energy Commission.

They will also address the mobilization of funding to strengthen regional connectivity and support the transition to clean and sustainable energy systems.

The session is expected to conclude with the adoption of reports and decisions from the previous session (Zanzibar 2023), the election of a new executive committee for the STC, and the formulation of strategic ministerial guidelines for priority projects in the transportation and energy sectors.
