Morocco has been re-elected as a member of the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for a new two-year term. The election took place during the 29th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the OPCW in The Hague from November 25 to 29.
This new mandate, which will run from May 2025 to May 2027, reflects the trust that OPCW member states have in Morocco, MAP news agency quoted a press release as indicating. It also reflects the country’s consistent commitment to supporting the objectives of the Chemical Weapons Convention, aimed at creating a world free of chemical weapons, the MAP report added.
Morocco’s delegation to the session was led by Mohamed Basri, the country’s Permanent Representative to the OPCW. The delegation included experts from national departments involved in implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention domestically.
The conference agenda covered various topics, including the Convention’s implementation, capacity-building programs for member states, the 2025 budget, and measures to combat the re-emergence of chemical threats. A key focus was the role of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), in advancing the Convention’s goals.
Morocco’s proactive approach to integrating emerging technologies was recognized during the session. The OPCW leadership, including Director-General Fernando Arias, and member states praised Morocco’s contributions, especially its hosting of the first OPCW High-Level Conference on AI in Rabat from October 22 to 24.
At the conference, Moroccan representatives spoke about how AI can serve as a powerful tool for international peace and security. Ambassador Basri called for ethical and responsible use of AI and urged collective action to ensure these technologies contribute to a safer world for future generations.
He added that it is important to strengthen cooperation between the OPCW and African countries, with a need for active South-South, North-South, and triangular cooperation, tailored to the specific needs of each country and region.
Morocco recently completed a one-year term as Vice President of the OPCW Conference of States Parties, representing the African Group from November 2023 to November 2024.
