Omar Hilale, Morocco’s permanent ambassador to the UN re-conveyed the country’s satisfaction with the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel.
Hilale made his remarks on Monday in New York in a meeting dedicated to the situation in the Middle East, including Palestine. He described the ceasefire as a breakthrough for the reconstruction of what was destroyed by the disastrous and genocidal Israeli campaign launched in October 2023.
“The ceasefire agreement should pave the way for the reconstruction of what was destroyed by the wa, as well as the initiation of a real peace process, allowing for the establishment of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living side by side and in peace with Israel,” Hilale said before the Security Council.
He noted that Morocco commends the progress made towards halting hostilities and attacks against civilians, hoping the ceasefire agreement will be fully respected through the release of hostages and detainees and the return of displaced persons.
Hilale also recalled King Mohammed VI’s commitment to the Palestinian cause, adding that his defense of this stance has been constant and clear as the creation of a Palestinian state is the cornerstone for peace and stability in the Middle East region.
“Gaza must be an integral part of the independent Palestinian territories where legal and political jurisdiction belongs to the Palestinian National Authority,” he said, adding that the continuation of Israeli unilateral acts in Al Quds exacerbates tensions.
Morocco frequently recalls its position as the North African kingdom continues to receive criticism, especially from local activists who are against the country’s decision to re-establish ties with Israel in December 2020.
The ceasefire agreement started on Sunday, with the hope of ending the massacres and the killing of civilians in Gaza. Its first phase will last for two weeks, with both Hamas and Israel agreeing to release and exchange hostages.
Under the ceasefire, Gaza also stands to witness a significant influx of humanitarian aid deliveries aimed at ending people’s starvation and lack of medical assistance to assist Palestinians.
Qatar has echoed Morocco’s appeal, reiterating the need to respect the Gaza ceasefire.
It also urged passing a binding resolution supporting the ceasefire’s full implementation.
