Morocco’s Ministry of Water and Equipment said today that no damage has been reported due to the earthquake that struck the province of Ouezzane, northern Morocco on Monday.

The ministry said that no damage at the level of road infrastructure and water installations was reported, noting that its central and regional services conducted regional tours to assess the impact of the earthquake in Ouezzane and neighboring provinces.

“No damage has been reported so far to road infrastructure and water installations,” the minister said.

On Monday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale struck the province at 11:48 p.m. The tremor struck the municipality of Brikcha in the Ouezzane province.

The earthquake was so strong that it was also felt in different regions across Morocco, including Rabat, Sale, and other cities from the North to the country’s central provinces.

Many videos and photos show people outside their homes across the country’s streets, fearing a similar devastating scenario that the North African kingdom witnessed in 2023.

In September of 2023, Morocco’s Al Haouz region, including Marrakech witnessed at least a devastating earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale.

The tragedy killed at least 3,000 while over 5,000 others lost their homes.

Since then, Morocco’s government has been pledging more efforts to boost its crisis management during natural disasters.

The country also signed agreements with international partners, including the  European Investment Bank (EIB), to tackle the enormous reconstruction and relief efforts.

EIB notably committed to provide a significant €1 billion loan to support the Moroccan government in mitigating the effects of the devastating earthquake that struck the Al Haouz region in September 2023.

“The first tranche of €500 million, signed in October 2024, marks the beginning of this substantial contribution, guaranteed by the European Union,” the EIB Vice President told MWN in a recent interview.
