Efforts to extinguish the forest blaze that broke out in the municipality of Derdara, in the province of Chefchaouen (north Morocco), have contained three of the four main fires, while aircraft are working to bring the last one under control, according to Morocco’s National Water and Forestry Agency (ANEF).

In a press release, the ANEF stated that very small fires had been contained on the ground by intervention teams, adding that the area damaged at this stage is estimated at around 500 hectares of forest and a few neighboring fields.

Nearly 450 members of various teams involved, as well as resources, equipment, and state-of-the-art technical means, have been mobilized, including four Canadair aircraft and four Turbo Thrush aircraft, as part of the efforts to control the fire, the same source adds.

These interventions, which have prevented human casualties, are continuing on Wednesday with the participation of teams on the ground and significant air and logistical resources, the Agency notes, reporting a notable improvement from yesterday.

All human and logistical resources remain deployed until the fire is completely under control and extinguished, the agency concludes.
