President of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC), Omar Zniber, held a working meeting on Wednesday in New York with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
The meeting tackled the HRC priorities, which include the themes set out by Morocco in the areas of climate, health, and food security and their impact on human rights worldwide.
Zniber, who is also Morocco’s Permanent Representative in Geneva, explained the objectives related to processes involving new technologies and artificial intelligence and their effects on human rights as opportunities and challenges.
Talks also focused on relations between the HRC and the United Nations headquarters in New York, including the General Secretariat’s support for the Council’s work on institutional and organizational aspects.
As part of his mission to New York, the diplomat met with several senior officials, including UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis, UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner, and UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous, in addition to the chairmen of several General Assembly committees in charge of promoting and protecting human rights within the UN system.
Zniber had earlier visited Washington, where he had working sessions with the Vice Presidents of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB) to associate the international financial institutions more closely with the realization of social and economic rights in the crucial fields of health, environmental protection, education, and gender equality.
The official also visited the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS), where he met with the Chairman of the Permanent Council, Chet Neymour, and the Secretary-General, Luis Almagro, to consolidate relations with regional organizations.
