The Grand Stade de Tanger, currently undergoing renovation ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, will be ready by the end of September, reported Anouar Amraoui, the architect in charge of the project.
“All interior spaces have been redesigned to meet FIFA standards ahead of the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal,” Amraoui told MAP, noting that the cost of the works amounts to 360 million USD.
“The structure of the Grand Stade de Tanger is the second largest of its kind in the world after the Maracanã in Brazil. It is a hybrid structure—half metal, half cable,” he explained, adding that the construction is being carried out by Moroccan companies, with a German technical assistance.
“In May 2024, we were still in the study phase, and today the stadium has taken shape, and the work is nearly complete. We are proud of what has been achieved.”
For his part, Omar Khyari, advisor to the President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), emphasized that the revamped stadium will undoubtedly enhance Morocco’s sports infrastructure, especially as it will become one of the largest stadiums in the Kingdom.
He highlighted that the stadium will be linked to additional infrastructure, in line with the clear-sighted vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, adding that the Grand Stade de Tanger is “one of the showpieces of continental and global football.”
“This will allow Morocco to position itself as a hub for continental and international football, thanks to the work of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation,” he added.
The renovated stadium now has a capacity of 75,000 seats. It has been transformed into a venue dedicated exclusively to football, with the complete removal of the athletics track, bringing spectators closer to the pitch and enhancing the atmosphere.
The field dimensions remain 105 × 68 meters, with a natural grass surface that meets FIFA standards. A monumental new roof is being installed, providing cover for all spectators and making the stadium one of the most advanced in Africa.
The architectural project focuses on both aesthetics and functionality to meet the requirements of major international events.
